New Gwadar International Airport has been officially stated to be commissioned by 2023. The construction work is dynamically pushing ahead in the GreenField Airport. It is the largest foreign investment project which is under the supervision of the Airport Engineering Branch of the China Railway Engineering Bureau. The project is managed and operated under the open sky policy by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA).
The Airport occupies 4,300 acres of land and when complete it will be the largest airport in the country and the second-largest airport in South Asia. Moreover, it will become Pakistan’s second airport that is capable of handling A380 Aircraft upon its commissioning in 2023.
The airport development is a part of the $56bn China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Project, which is a cornerstone of China’s One Belt One Road initiative. NGIA is fully funded by China as a grant with an expected cost of $246 million.
The single runway at the airport will have a length of 3,658 meters and a width of 75metres. It will have the capacity to house narrow-body aircrafts such as Boeing B-737 and ATR 72, along with wide-body aircrafts such as Boeing B-747 and Airbus A-380 for both international and domestic routes. The runaway will be complemented by a 23m-long taxiway with 10.5m paved shoulders on both sides.
Moreover, the New Gwadar International Airport will have the accommodation to build a second runway which will be located to the north of the main runway.
The NGIA will also include a modern terminal building, spread over an area of 1400m². The cargo terminal will have refrigeration facilities for perishable items, with an initial handling capacity of 30,000t per annum. The cargo terminal will be featuring modern facilities along with ensuring safe operations by improving passenger convenience and comfort.
The Airport infrastructure will also include an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, crash, rescue, and fire facilities, and a fuel farm. The associated buildings and infrastructure will also support the airport’s operations.
The Greenfield Airport is located in Gurandani, 26km northeast of the existing Airport in the Smart Port City of Gwadar on the south-western Arabian Sea coast of the Balochistan region.
New Gwadar International Airport holds a lot of importance for the overall success of the Gwadar Master plan. The project is in line with the vision of the Honorable PM to promote the tourism industry in Pakistan.
The airport will promote a high influx of tourists in Pakistan along with stimulating the development of the Gwadar peninsula and boosting trade between Pakistan and China. Furthermore, the Airport will provide humongous cargo handling and employment opportunities as well. It will encourage more and more expats and other investors to invest in Gwadar. Thus, it will expand the real estate horizon in Gwadar.
