The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved $ 7.2 billion for the dualization and up-gradation of the 1872km long ML-1 Railway track between Peshawar and Karachi under the Second Phase of CPEC, Asim Saleem Bajwa (Chairman CPEC Authority) stated.

CDWP has referred a $7.2 billion ML-1 Railway Project for its dualization and up-gradation to the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) on 6th June 2020. Pakistan gives a high priority to this project because of its strategic importance and CDWP’s clearance paved the way for its inauguration this year. Now, the tender will be issued after getting further approval from ECNEC.

The track will start from Karachi, pass through Hyderabad, Rohri; Multan, Lahore; Rawalpindi, and terminate at Peshawar. Besides, the up-gradation of Pakistan Railway Academy Walton in Lahore and the establishment of Dry Port at Havelian Station will also be completed as a part of this project.  A 527km long track under Phase-1 of the project will pass through Peshawar, Rawalpindi & Lahore to be completed in between January 2021 to December 2024. In the second and third phases of ML-1, the old and dilapidated infrastructure of the railway track will be upgraded and improved. Moreover, this project will help to manage train operations for the next 150 years. Once completed, the speed of passenger and freight trains will be increased to 160 km/h and 120km/h respectively. This significant project will generate revenue to strengthen the economy of Pakistan and would revamp the country’s train infrastructure as well.
