New Gwadar International Airport has been officially stated to be commissioned by 2023. The construction work is dynamically pushing ahead in the GreenField Airport. It is the largest foreign investment project which is under the supervision of the Airport Engineering Branch of the China Railway Engineering Bureau. The project is managed and operated under the open sky policy by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA). nnThe Airport occupies 4,300 acres of land and when complete it will be the largest airport in the country and the second-largest airport in South Asia. Moreover, it will become Pakistan’s second airport that is capable of handling A380 Aircraft upon its commissioning in 2023. nnThe airport development is a part of the $56bn China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Project, which is a cornerstone of China’s One Belt One Road initiative. NGIA is fully funded by China as a grant with an expected cost of $246 million. n
Features
nThe single runway at the airport will have a length of 3,658 meters and a width of 75metres. It will have the capacity to house narrow-body aircrafts such as Boeing B-737 and ATR 72, along with wide-body aircrafts such as Boeing B-747 and Airbus A-380 for both international and domestic routes. The runaway will be complemented by a 23m-long taxiway with 10.5m paved shoulders on both sides.nnMoreover, the New Gwadar International Airport will have the accommodation to build a second runway which will be located to the north of the main runway. n
Infrastructure
nThe NGIA will also include a modern terminal building, spread over an area of 1400m². The cargo terminal will have refrigeration facilities for perishable items, with an initial handling capacity of 30,000t per annum. The cargo terminal will be featuring modern facilities along with ensuring safe operations by improving passenger convenience and comfort. nnThe Airport infrastructure will also include an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, crash, rescue, and fire facilities, and a fuel farm. The associated buildings and infrastructure will also support the airport’s operations. n

nThe Greenfield Airport is located in Gurandani, 26km northeast of the existing Airport in the Smart Port City of Gwadar on the south-western Arabian Sea coast of the Balochistan region. n

Development Timeline
nThe New Gwadar International Airport was initiated in 2014 as an early harvest, high priority project under China Pakistan Economic Corridor. The project was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in January 2015.nnSoil tested on the site started in 2018 and involved the drilling of 300 boreholes in various locations. nnThe Groundbreaking ceremony was held in March 2019, and it is officially announced to be operational by September 2023.
